The Honest Guide to Washing Hispanic Hair (From Two Dermatologists)

By Dr. Danilo C. Del Campo Jr., board-certified dermatologist, co-founder of Los Doctores Cubanos.

The short answer first

Hispanic hair is not one thing. It is curly, coily, wavy, straight, fine, dense, color-treated, chemically processed, and everything in between. Most generic hair-care advice on the internet was not written with that range in mind. After years of seeing Hispanic patients in our practice, here is the honest version of what actually matters.

How often should you wash Hispanic hair?

If your hair is curly, coily, or chemically processed, washing 2–3 times a week is usually enough. Daily washing strips natural oils and can leave the hair brittle. If your hair is straighter or naturally oilier at the scalp, you may need to wash 3–4 times a week. The right number is the one that leaves your scalp clean without making your strands feel dry by day three.

The thing most brands get wrong

Most hair brands focus on the strand. Conditioners that coat. Serums that smooth. Treatments that promise repair. All of that has its place, but it is downstream of the real driver of hair density: scalp health.

A healthy scalp environment is the foundation of fuller, thicker hair. When the scalp is balanced — clean, hydrated, not inflamed — the follicles do their job. When it is not, even the best strand-level products will only do so much.

What we look for in a shampoo

Plain-language ingredient checklist:

  • Sulfate-free or sulfate-conscious — gentle cleansing without stripping natural oils.
  • Color-safe — protects color-treated hair from premature fade.
  • Scalp-supporting actives — saw palmetto, biotin, panthenol, and ingredients that signal the scalp to do its job.
  • No harsh fillers — parabens, harsh fragrances, and unnecessary additives that irritate sensitive scalps.

What we built

This is the lens we used to design the Hair Repair Max Bundle. Two shampoos and two conditioners, doctor-formulated for Hispanic hair. Powered by Stimucap® — our proprietary scalp-support complex (Sodium DNA, saw palmetto, biotin, panthenol, olive leaf, orange leaf). Sulfate-free, paraben-free, color-safe. Subscription only, $99 every 60 days, free shipping, skip or cancel anytime.

The 60-day cycle is intentional. Hair growth changes show up at 60–90 days of consistent use. The Bundle is built around that timeline so the routine becomes a habit, not a chore.

Three habits that move the needle

  1. Massage shampoo into the scalp for 60 seconds. Most people cleanse for 10. Sixty seconds gives the actives time to work and improves circulation.
  2. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, not the scalp. Conditioner on the scalp can clog and weigh hair down.
  3. Patience. Hair growth cycles take time. Stay on the routine for at least 60 days before judging whether it works.

The honest disclaimer

If you are dealing with diagnosed hair loss — alopecia, thyroid-driven thinning, scarring conditions — please see a dermatologist in person. Topical products are part of the picture, not a replacement for medical care. The Bundle is designed to support density and reduce breakage in healthy adults; it is not a treatment for medical hair loss conditions.
